College Choice Releases 2017 Ranking for the Best Online Big Data Degrees

EUGENE, Ore., March 9, 2023 /PRNewswire |  College Choice, a leading authority in college and university rankings and resources, has published a ranking of the 50 Best Online Big Data Degrees for 2017.

Schools are quickly mobilizing to create highly specific programs tailored to the growing need for professionals who know how to wrangle terabytes of information, interpret it, and explain to the rest of us how it effects a company’s needs on the ground. And many of these programs are available in to online students.

“Over the course of a relatively short time, big data has left no industry untouched, so there is a desperate need for expertise in this field,” Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. “Online programs in big data go by different names—often a Master of Science in business analytics or data mining—but what they have in common is a commitment to training future big data professionals who will help us figure out what to do with the masses of information at our disposal.”

Currently, the top five jobs in technology are positions that rely heavily on data mining and analytics, according to U.S. News & World Report. From computer systems analysts to information scientists, the need for people to collate, investigate, and interpret big data is on a dramatic rise in the U.S.

A recent study conducted by the McKinsey Global Institute projects a 21 percent rise in data analysis jobs in the next eight years alone. This means the need for people with analytical and data mining education is in high demand. Indeed, demand is high and the return is even higher; data analysts of all stripes and skills make, on average, between $81,000 and $131,000 annually.

College Choice developed its list by looking at academic quality along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings.
