NEW YORK CITY | The new Trump era’s assault on journalists, information gathering and facts poses an unprecedented challenge. With the factual landscape transforming at a dizzying pace, the need to accurately report and share reliable information is more urgent than ever.
How can professional journalists and the info-sharing public navigate today’s profound reality turbulence when so many people feel entitled to their own facts (including the U.S. President) and trust in the media is low?
To explore ways to fight the false and find the true, the Society of Professional Journalists’ New York chapter, known as Deadline Club, assembled an A-list panel of top media and law experts.
Bill Adair, creator of Politifact, Knight Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy and director of Duke University’s DeWitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy;
Kyle Pope, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Columbia Journalism Review;
Mandy Jenkins, head of news at Storyful; and
Lynn Oberlander, general counsel of media operations at First Look Media and board director for the Media Law Resource Center.
The moderator was Sheryl Huggins Salomon, senior editor-at-large and former managing editor of TheRoot.com.
The event was organized by Jessica Seigel, video recorded and edited by M. Cat Sandoval, and photographed by Marcus Beasley.
The Deadline Club is the largest chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, and the society’s 2013 Large Chapter of the Year. Founded in New York City in 1925, it has around 300 members working in newspapers, magazines, radio, television and the Internet, as well as retired journalists and journalism educators
