Eve Ensler, V-Day founder and author of "Vagina Monologues"

NEW YORK CITY: Not many performing artists have done more for women and girls, especially in the developing world, than Eve Ensler, the playwright, performer, and author of The Vagina Monologues. She matters because she founded the global movement V-Day, which battles to end violence against women. The extent of her activism and influence will be confirmed when her new website www.eveensler.org launches on Monday, April 16.  The site is bound to be the next best thing than having Ensler over for dinner or seeing her onstage.

It will be a comprehensive archive of her extensive articles, essays, books, plays, films, documentaries and speeches. The site will also serve up information of what’s happening. Her next theatrical production, Emotional Creature, will premiere at Berkeley Rep June 14 – July 15, 2023 in California  The director is a certified talent: Obie Award-winning director Jo Bonney.

I haven’t read the play yet, unfortunately. The best I can do is offer the p.r. language. According to a prepared statement, Emotional Creature “is made up of original monologues and irresistible songs about and for girls. Placing their stories squarely center stage, it gives full expression to their secret voices and innermost thoughts, highlighting the diversity and commonality of the issues they face. Emotional Creature is a call, a reckoning, an education, an act of empowerment for girls, and an illumination for parents and for us all.” The play was first workshopped in August 2010 at New York Stage and Film at Vassar College with subsequent workshops in Johannesburg, South Africa and Paris, France.  For more information, visit www.berkeleyrep.org.

The past three to five years have been great for Ensler. In November 2009, she was named one of US News & World Report’s ”Best Leaders” in association with the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at Harvard Kennedy School.  In 2010 she was named one of “125 Women Who Changed Our World” by Good Housekeeping Magazine.  In 2011 she was named one of Nwsweek’s “150 Women Who Changed the World” and The Guardian’s “100 Most Influential Women.”
