NEW YORK CITY |  New York arts and entertainment were disrupted by Hurricane Sandy. Power outage continues below 34th Street. Officially, ConEd says power to be restored to all customers within 4 days.

Moreover, as of this posting, expect most subways to be down for the rest of the week. Some city buses are now running with no fares (free), and buses will become more available starting at 5 PM. 23 fires still burning; 4,000+ trees reported down; 6,000+ in emergency shelters; LGA completely under water. Over 80 homes were completely destroyed in Breezy Point, Queens from a massive fire. Coney Island is still dealing with major flooding. Queens Midtown, Holland and Batter Tunnels remained closed. East River Bridges are open. Below is a sampling of most New York shows, events and entertainment that will resume performances starting Wednesday, Oct. 31.  This list also notes the shows whose openings or performances have been postponed.

Folk rock musical Son of a Gun resumes performances on Friday, Nov. 2
Son of a Gun, a new folk rock musical which was planned to begin performances at Theatre Row on Thursday, November 1 will instead begin performances on Friday, November 2. Because of weather conditions, the delivery of some essential production materials was not on schedule, thus causing a delay. Patrons with tickets for the affected performance should contact their point of sale.

LaMaMa E.T.C. is closed today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday). However, Triple Shadow’s 2 From the Sea performs this weekend.

Final performance of Triple Shadow’s evocative solo adaptations of plays whose themes are based on stories of the sea: Dylan Thomas’s “Holiday Memory,” performed by Seamus Maynard; and John Millington Synge’s “Riders to the Sea,” performed by Mari Andrejco. Films of the sea accompany the works, and Edward Herbst performs live his music for toy piano, harmonium, and mandolin, along with traditional Irish folksongs. Director is Beth Skinner, lighting design is by Bessie and Drama Desk winner Paul Clay (RENT), and scenic design is by Obie winner Jun Maeda.

The Kitchen is closed this week.

Due to serious damage sustained in our theater during Hurricane Sandy, The Kitchen will be closed this week. In the days ahead, the Kitchen will seek to reschedule performances of Richard Maxwell’s Neutral Hero. They will be in contact with all ticket holders regarding these new dates as quickly as possible. Please do not email the box office in the interim–; the building is still without electricity!

Originally scheduled for October 31, the opening for Matt Keegan and Eileen Quinlan’s exhibition Y? O! G… A. is also postponed. They anticipate that the show will open next week.

Bayanihan National Dance Company to open as scheduled at the Jazz at Lincoln Center

The Embassy of the Philippines in Washington, D.C. and the Philippine Consulate General in New York are coordinating with the management of the venues for the performances of the Bayanihan National Dance Company at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York on November 1 at 7:30 p.m. and the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater at Washington, D.C. on November 3 at 7:30 p.m. and November 4 at 2:00 p.m. As of this writing, no cancellation is expected and the shows are expected to proceed as scheduled. Periodic advisories will continue to be issued.

Through personal experiences we can find the most honest and vulnerable wounds that are waiting to be treated in the racial emergency room of the American consciousness. Vineyard Theatre of NYC suspends performances of Checkers due to power outages.

Due to extensive power outages in downtown Manhattan as a result of the hurricane, Vineyard Theatre (108 E. 15 St. in Union Square) is cancelling performances of its world-premiere production of CHECKERS until further notice, starting this evening, Tuesday, October 30. Originally set to open on Wednesday, October 31, the production’s new  opening date will be announced along with the resumption of performances.

According to Jennifer Garvey-Blackwell, The Vineyard’s Executive Producer, 6″Along with countless other New Yorkers, we are assessing the aftermath of  the storm and working with colleagues in the neighborhood to determine when power will be restored and when performances can resume on our stage. We appreciate everyone’s resilience and understanding under these exceptional circumstances.”

CHECKERS — a new play by Douglas McGrath about Richard and Pat Nixon and his landmark Checkers speech in 1952 — is the first play of the 30th anniversary season at Vineyard Theatre.

Directed by Terry Kinney, the cast of CHECKERS includes Kelly Coffield Park, Kathryn Erbe, Joel Marsh Garland, Anthony LaPaglia, Kevin O’Rourke, John Ottovino, Mark Shanahan, Lewis J. Stadlen and Robert Stanton.

French Institute Alliance Française remains closed on Oct. 31

Due to lingering problems in the storm’s aftermath, the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) will remain closed on Wednesday, October 31.  All French classes and events at all locations in New York and New Jersey are cancelled for Wednesday.  The FIAF Preschool will remain closed on Wednesday.  The Library, Gallery, and FIAF building will remain closed to the public. Please check fiaf.org for the latest information.
