CLOUD for the Art Experiment at Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow

MOSCOW, RUSSIA | What follows is a post from Garage Center for Contemporary Culture which is reviving its legendary Art Experiment in January 2013.

Donate your burnt light bulbs to art! In order to create CLOUD for the Art Experiment, we need 5,000+ light bulbs. The thing is, they don’t have to work – in fact, we’d love it if they don’t. That way, there’s no waste, just the gentle re-imagination of trash into treasure and waste into art. We’re accepting the bulbs at the information desk in the Garage pavilion in Gorky Park until 27 December. We’re looking for classic, incandescent light bulbs, both clear and semi-opaque. Unfortunately, we can’t use burnt out compact fluorescent bulbs, bulbs with silver backings, tube lights, or bulbs that you can’t see through. Thank you in advance!

In January 2013, Garage Center for Contemporary Culture’s legendary Art Experiment returns. Art Experiment takes on a new twist - running for nearly a month in Garage’s new pavilion in Gorky Park – this year organisers are keeping activities a close guarded secret. Visitors are invited to come and unlock hidden doors to other worlds and see ?clouds’ as they have never seen them before, when the project opens on 2nd January.

Art Experiment promises to create a unique journey, offering new routes to explore contemporary culture. Taking inspiration from the universe and exploring the relationship between the microscopic and the macroscopic, artists will create installations that help visitors discover new ways of seeing the world. Visitors are instructed to ?be imaginative, be creative and be prepared’.

The annual event, which began in 2010, enables visitors to interact with art in new and unexpected ways. Last year’s Art Experiment - which attracted over 6,000 visitors - invited participants to take over Garage for two days of painting, sticking, drawing, carving and baking, filling the space with their own ideas and creative energy. Participants were offered a series of surprising and surreal encounters with the magical and bizarre. Work included Martin Creed’s Half the air in a given space and surrealist art biscuits and sensory still life paintings with the British duo Bompas & Parr.

Tickets are limited and should be purchased in advance.
Admission fee: 1000 rub.

Opened in 2008, Garage Center for Contemporary Culture is a major non-profit international project based in Moscow, dedicated to exploring and developing contemporary culture as a platform for new thinking. Garage brings important international modern and contemporary art and culture to Moscow, to raise the profile of Russian contemporary culture and to encourage a new generation of Russian artists. These aims are explored through a series of exhibitions ranging from major surveys of important collections to single-artist retrospectives and group exhibitions. Garage also hosts a strong program of special events, including talks, film screenings, workshops, performances and creative activities for children and young people. In addition, there is a publishing program that is being developed.

Garage is a project of The IRIS Foundation, founded by Dasha Zhukova. It receives support from the British Council www.britishcouncil.org/russia.
