PHILADELPHIA |  The 2016 presidential election is not about Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative policies, but about the “American experiment of self-government”– democracy itself, US President Barack Obama told the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night.

“It’s not just a choice between parties or policies; the usual debates between left and right,” Obama said. “This is a more fundamental choice– about who we are as a people.

“Anyone who threatens our values, whether fascists or communists or jihadists or homegrown demagogues, will always fail in the end,” he said. “That’s America.”

Democrats called on Americans to reject what they called the politics of fear and division of the GOP and elect Hillary Clinton during the third day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

“If you’re serious about democracy, you can’t afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue. You’ve got to get in the arena with her, because democracy isn’t a spectator sport. America isn’t about ‘yes he will.’ It’s about ‘yes WE can,'” Obama said.

President Obama, in particular, offered an optimistic vision of the country and a strong indictment of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump Wednesday night in a speech that also cast Hillary Clinton as the best candidate to carry on his legacy and complete his unfinished business.

The speech outlined a “big choice” before the American people come November– an atypical election between liberal democratic ideals and a dangerous, illiberal demagogue.

“America is already great. America is already strong,” he said during his speech to close out the Democratic National Convention. “And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump.”

It was a speech aimed at both defending his legacy and “passing the baton” to Clinton, while unifying Democrats by acknowledging liberal followers of Sen. Bernie Sanders, the party’s presidential runner-up, were correct in their frustrations that there was more work to be done.

iculture1world-obama_clintonObama vouched for Clinton in personal terms, telling a cheering crowd that because of his work with her as secretary of state “I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America.”

Trump “cozies up to Putin, praises Saddam Hussein, and tells the NATO allies that stood by our side after 9/11 that they have to pay up if they want our protection,” Obama said. “Well, America’s promises do not come with a price tag. We meet our commitments. And that’s one reason why almost every country on Earth sees America as stronger and more respected today than they did eight years ago.”

The president has said that no candidate has ever been more qualified than Clinton to run for the Oval Office. Earlier on Wednesday night, Obama’s vice president, Joe Biden, said that Trump is the least prepared candidate ever– of any major political party.

“I’m asking you to join me– to reject cynicism, reject fear, to summon what’s best in us,” Obama concluded, “to elect Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States, and show the world we still believe in the promise of this great nation.” — in the culture of one world
