NEW YORK CITY, July 25, 2023 |  At a gathering Tuesday night in New York City, more than 200 members of progressive social movements and groups in the U.S. celebrated the day of solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution and President Hugo Chávez in Venezuela.

The event was held in the midtown auditorium of 1199 SEIU, the United Health Care Workers East chapter of the Service Employees International Union, and featured music and cultural activities as well as messages of solidarity offered by those in attendance.

Larry Moscowitz, a speaker from the Left Labor Project, explained that his organization is aware of Venezuela’s efforts to assert its independence.

“We feel proud and consider ourselves privileged to participate in these events in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and President Chávez, we believe in that change in social policy and we defend the efforts of Venezuela and its people,” Moscowitz said during his presentation.

He added that “for us it is very important to defeat the power of the right and struggle in favor of socialist changes as the Bolivarian Revolution is doing. We are going to continue fighting for the goals and objectives that we have in common with the revolutionary process in Venezuela.”

Sasha Murphy of the ANSWER Coalition also expressed a positive view of the path of the Venezuelan people, saying: “From here, we feel that Venezuela is an inspiring model not just for Latin America, but also for all the continents in the world and that’s why we want to support the Venezuelan revolution, not hide it. That’s why we proclaim our support to help grow an anti-imperialist militant socialist movement in defense of the process of liberation that the people of Latin America are living today.”

Also represented at the solidarity event was the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) of El Salvador. New York representative Arnaldo Azucena said: “It’s a revolution that’s so young but gives so much hope to the world that we can’t let it stand alone. We should work as brothers so that this revolution which struggles for social justice and equality is the representation of change in 21st century socialism.”

After the short speeches by the different groups, many participants expressed their hope that President Hugo Chávez would be reelected for the 2013-2019 period in Venezuela’s elections on October 7.

The special guest at the event was a member of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Francisco Toreralba of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). He highlighted the importance of such gatherings on a global level to generate an exchange of experiences and realities among brotherly peoples.

Torrealba said that the global day of solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution helps consolidate unity and eliminate obstacles that prevent awareness of the social changes that are taking place.

“We are convinced that popular organization, the people, citizens’ organizations of different kinds, can defeat the manipulation of the great capitalist spheres, of the big media that attempts to conspire and obscure the realities of our countries, not just Venezuela, but the whole world,” Congressman Torrealba said.

Torrealba pointed out the double significance of the event, saying: “Today it is a very special day in Venezuela, not just because of this day of solidarity with the revolutionary process, but also because today marks the 299th anniversary of the birth of the father of our nation, our Liberator, Simón Bolívar.”
