NEW YORK CITY |  Award-winning director Oliver Stone joins Democracy Now! in studio today for an extended interview about the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which was chronicled in his blockbuster film, JFK.  We also spoke with Peter Kuznick, professor of history and director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University, who co-wrote the book with Stone, The Untold History of the United States, which was made into a 10-part Showtime series.

We ask them why it is important to look back at the assassination today. A commemorative edition of “JFK” comes out next week. W

We also ask him if he would consider making a film about NSA surveillance and Edward Snowden. “I think Snowden’s been very smart and done the best he can under most difficult circumstances,” Stone says.

However, for the time being, Stone confirms that his next project will be a biographical film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. starring Jamie Foxx. Stone says he is writing the film with the cooperation of the King estate.

He said: “I’ve been writing the screenplay for the Martin Luther King story, with the cooperation of the estate. I can’t say for sure it’s going to happen. I really hope so. Jamie Foxx is very interested, and I’m—I’ve worked with Jamie before, and I think he can do a hell of a job as King. I want to tell a story about a man who was a great American, I think, right? He was in — he was our Gandhi. He was as close as I know to an American Gandhi, and a non—believed in nonviolence, but a strong nonviolent resistance.”

Oliver Stone says: “Martin Luther King Jr. was our Ghandi. He spoke out not only for civil rights, but when he crossed over, against militarism, greed, and the Vietnam War.”
