NEW YORK CITY |   Going to Off-Broadway shows has never been less expensive. As power and mass transit continues to slowly come back online for New Yorkers and storm relief efforts advance, and as long gas lines have sprung up across the five boroughs (prompting yet another emergency response on the state and federal level), downtown New York is showing signs of life.

“Off-Broadway theaters in Lower Manhattan have long demonstrated their survival skills, as evidenced after 9-11 and once again, they are bouncing back,” said George Forbes, executive director of the Lucille Lortel Foundation in a prepared statement. “We hope everyone will take advantage of this generous offer, and support the theaters that continue to be dramatically impacted by circumstances far beyond their control.”

Off-Broadway shows such as Checkers, Don’t Go Gentle, Fuerza Bruta, Giant, The Golden Land, The Other Josh Cohen, Sorry, Stomp, A Summer Day, The Twenty-Seventh Man, and Wild with Happy are resuming performances, as services by Con Edison resume downtown.

To celebrate their return, many Off-Broadway shows are offering theater-goers tickets discounted tickets. The only thing you have to do is give them the code “Sandy.” A number of performances are free, especially for those who have been displaced by Sandy.

Here is a complete sampling of those participating theaters and shows:

TKTS South Street Seaport remains closed; TKTS Times Square remains open; TKTS Downtown Brooklyn re-opens when subway transit returns

Theatre Development Fund announced that “its satellite TKTS Discount Booth at South Street Seaport will remain closed until further notice due to extensive water damage sustained as a result of Hurricane Sandy. TDF’s main TKTS Discount Booth in Times Square remains open and TDF’s other satellite TKTS Discount Booth in Downtown Brooklyn will reopen as soon as mass transit is fully operational. An announcement will be made when TKTS Downtown Brooklyn reopens.”

Moreover, TKTS Times Square (located at Broadway and 47th Street in Manhattan) has added two new services.

(1) On two-performance days, matinee and evening tickets are being sold simultaneously. For example: on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, when TKTS opens at 10am (or 11am on Sundays), patrons are able to purchase matinee and/or evening performance discount tickets for that day. Previously, matinee tickets were sold only from 10am to 2pm and evening tickets sold only from 3pm to 8pm.

(2) Additionally, Window #1 serves as a “Full-Price Ticket Window” which will allows TKTS Times Square ticket buyers to purchase full-price tickets to all shows for future performances or same day full-price tickets to shows that are not available at a discount at any other TKTS Booth windows.

For more information about TDF’s TKTS Discount Booths, go to: www.tdf.org/tkts.

Show description: Dispatches from (A)mended America began as a conversation between Godfrey L. Simmons Jr., a 42-year-old black man, and Brandt Adams, a 25-year-old white man. It was post-election 2008 and both men discovered they were nagged by the “race question.” Dispatches from (A)mended America uses live theatre, audience participation and interactive social media to challenge assumptions about race through the words of the writers, the interviewees and the audience. Ron Russell directs this production, written and performed by Brandt Adams and Godfrey L. Simmons, Jr. The ensemble includes Jacob Ming-Trent, Lori E. Parquet, James Wallert and Sarah Winkler. Dispatches from (A)mended America now runs through November 24th.
