NEW YORK CITY |   So tonight I was supposed to go an opening of a show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Problem was, the only way to get to BAM is to take a cab. It’s otherwise impossible to get to Brooklyn from Manhattan using the subways. Or buses. The traffic was awful; there was a gridlock. There was just no way for me to get there in time for the curtain, so I gave up.

Everywhere in New York City, Hurricane Sandy caused such disruption that only Broadway shows have actually resumed performances. That’s great for the commercial theater. But New York theater is so much more than Broadway. So here is a sampling of what’s going on: disruptions, cancellations, resumption of performances, extensions of runs, postponements, and in many cases, pending statuses.

In the meantime, I encourage you to visit the websites of our National Coalition Partners, CERF+ and ArtsReady, for resource links and more disaster relief information. In addition, the Council on Foundations and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy have been tracking foundation and donor responses to relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy. Pass on this important information to anyone whom you believe could use these resources.

Here’s what is happening as of today, Friday November 2. I hope that it helps you:

Negro Ensemble Company pushes back opening night, adds more performances

Negro Ensemble Company’s Cabaret Émigré by Sophia Romma was originally scheduled to perform November 2 to 18. The play will now open November 7 and will add performances  November 11, 13 and 14 to make up for lost shows due to Hurricane Sandy. This new play, directed by Charles Weldon, is being presented by Negro Ensemble Company at the Lion Theater, Theater Row.

Here is a description of the play: “An emigrant feels like a circus man who is traveling the endless doroga (Russian for “the road.”) The sins of your past are inconsequential and your future is in limbo. It’s a human condition that is painted poetically in Cabaret ÉmigrĂ©.  The play contains 10 Lewis Carroll-style testimonials that are told as cabaret acts by a collection of Ă©migrĂ©s who are primarily Russian Jews (like the author), but also include Ă©migrĂ©s from Latin America and Africa. All of them  have no other motive than to entertain each other and their resulting acts are outrageous and macabre, like a journey down the rabbit hole.”

Generators did not arrive, so August Strindberg Rep cancels performances and extends run

Produces of Casper’s Fat Tuesday and The Stronger, presented by August Strindberg Rep, had hoped to go on with the show. Unfortunately, the generators the troupe needed could not be delivered. So performances this week have been canceled and the show has been extended through November 25.

What is the show about? This is a pairing of two Strindberg one-acts, an undiscovered one and a novel adaptation of a more familiar one. Casper’s Fat Tuesday, the undiscovered one, is a Punch-and-Judy show, to be directed by Robert Greer as a sort of Commedia dell’ Arte. The more familiar play is The Stronger, is a monologue for two actresses, one of whom never speaks. The speaking woman, Mrs. X, concludes over the course of three-quarters of and hour that the friend she is having coffee with, Ms. Y, is her husband’s lover. In an unusual adaptation, the latter will be performed by a man. This is the second production of August Strindberg Rep, which debuted last Spring with Strindberg’s comedy Playing With Fire, adapted by Leslie Lee, a co-production with The Negro Ensemble that opened at the New School Theatre and moved to the Gene Frankel Theatre for an extended run. Robert Greer is Artistic Director of August Strindberg Rep.

REVISED SCHEDULE:
November 8 to 25:
Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street (between Bowery and Lafayette, East Village)
Presented by August Strindberg Repertory Theatre and Pink Pig Ballet in association with Theater Resources Unlimited.
Tickets $18 general admission; seniors and students $9
Box office: SMARTTIX, 212-868-4444; http://www.smarttix.com
