NEW YORK CITY — The Gay and Lesbian Affirmative Psychotherapy (GLAP) invites all mental-health professionals to attend, participate and deliver presentations in its third bi-annual Transgender Symposium. This upcoming symposium will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 in New York City. The topic of discussion will be “Trans Spectrum,” an exploration of the diverse make-up and mental-health needs within transgender communities.

“Trans Spectrum” will be a queer- and trans-affirmative conference. This 2012 symposium will focus on clinical work across the transgender spectrum, highlighting work within sub-communities of race, ethnicity, class, age, gender and gendered identities, ability, and sexual orientation. Presentations will seek to specifically increase the visibility of trans-communities of color, trans-youth and elders, and trans-women.

Gay and Lesbian Affirmative Psychotherapy

A division of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP), GLAP has been a leader in addressing the mental health needs of transgender communities. Dedicated to providing high-quality therapy at low to moderate costs, offering post-graduate training for therapists, and educating the public about mental health issues, ICP is one of the oldest and largest not-for-profit mental health training and treatment facilities in New York City.

In 2008, GLAP organized its first Transgender Symposium — the first event of its kind to provide mental-health professionals with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding in treating transgender clients in a clinical setting. Over 100 clinicians attended the 2008 event.

In 2010, GLAP organized a two-day symposium, “In Translation: Clinical Dialogues Spanning the Transgender Spectrum,” which featured 27 workshops covering a wide breadth of transgender clinical issues. GLAP posted notices of the 2010 Symposium on a wide range of LGBTQ and clinical websites, sent out a mailing to 5,500 people, as well as emailed invitations to over 6,000 people.

GLAP also partnered with the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health to publish two special issues featuring papers presented at the 2010 conference. The Symposium received regional, national and international attention. Presenters, professionals and attendees traveled from France, Canada, the U.S. Midwest, South, West Coast and the greater Tri-State New York area to attend the symposium. Over 165 clinicians attended the 2010 Symposium.

GLAP is currently seeking presenters and corporate partners to participate in the 2012 Trans Spectrum Symposium. If you are interested in sponsoring or participating in the February 2012 Symposium, please contact GLAP’s Program Coordinator, Deborah Ranker at 212-333-3444 or glap@icpnyc.org.
