NEW YORK CITY |   Nominations for the 62nd Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced this morning at Feinstein’s/54 Below by Laura Benanti (SHE LOVES ME) and Javier Muñoz (HAMILTON).  Interestingly, 10 shows got practically the same number of nominations (ranging from 7 to 10), with no clear guide that the Drama Desk Awards could even predict which of them rule this spring.

The nominations announcement was streamed live on www.TheaterMania.com. The full list of nominees is available on its website and below.

In keeping with the Drama Desk’s mission, nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway during the 2016-2017 New York theater season. Eligibility and award category designations for the productions under consideration this season were determined by the Drama Desk Board of Directors with recommendations from the Nominating Committee.

The Drama Desk nominating committee considered DEAR EVAN HANSEN and SIGNIFICANT OTHER in the 2015 - 2016 season, making them ineligible for consideration this season.  INDECENT, SWEAT and OSLO were considered for their Off Broadway runs, even though they subsequently transferred to Broadway this season.

The committee determined that the book and score of NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 were not sufficiently different from earlier, already eligible productions to be considered this season. However, the design, staging, and new members of the company were considered this year.

The committee determined that all aspects of IN TRANSIT had been significantly reworked since its Off Broadway engagement in 2010 and thus deemed it eligible for consideration this season.  In accordance with the wishes of its producers, the Broadway revival of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE was not considered.

With respect to the Broadway production of SUNSET BOULEVARD, the committee determined that Glenn Close’s performance and costumes were not eligible because of eligibility in an earlier season, but the other performances, direction, choreography, and design aspects were eligible.

The Drama Desk nominees will receive their official nomination certificates at the nominees’ reception on May 10th at The New York Marriott Marquis.

The 62nd Annual Drama Desk Awards, hosted by Michael Urie, will take place on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 8:00 PM at The Town Hall in Manhattan. For the sixth consecutive year, TheaterMania will present the awards ceremony and Joey Parnes Productions will produce and manage the show. Gretchen Shugart is the Managing Executive Producer of the Drama Desk Awards and Charles Wright is the President of the Drama Desk. The Awards show will be written by Bill Rosenfield (46 Beacon)anddirected by Mark Waldrop (Not That Jewish, Howard Crabtree’s When Pigs Fly, Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends).

About Drama Desk

Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics’ organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.
