NEW YORK CITY | We now get three extra chances to see John Leguizamo perform live in his solo show, LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS, at the Joseph Papp Public Theater.

The Public Theater announced recently that three final performances have been added to this fiercely funny, satirical one-man show was inspired by Leguizamo’s observation that Latinos are essentially invisible in the standard American history curriculum. This insightful, hilarious, and often overlooked version of American history, officially opened on Monday, March 27, and was originally extended through April 23.

Three additional performances have been added on Tuesday, April 25; Wednesday, April 26; and Friday, April 28 at 8:00 p.m.

Surprisingly poignant and sly, LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS poses sharp and timely questions of identity as it intersects with education and fatherhood. The actor and comedia admits he’s always felt like a second-class citizen in his own country. He says this early on during his latest one-man show. The 52-year-old actor was born in Colombia, but moved to New York when he was only 4 years old. He grew up in Queens and studied theater at NYU, before dropping out and starting what would become a prolific career in acting: He’s acted in more than 100 movies and TV shows and his one-man shows, like FREAK and GHETTO KLOWN, have gone on to become HBO specials.

Leguizamo embodies the Latin American experience in the U.S. — the young immigrant from the ghetto who goes on to be a Hollywood star. And yet, he frequently finds himself under attack, mostly on Twitter, because of his heritage. “People will say something like, ‘Why don’t you get out of our country if you don’t like it?’ or ‘You don’t belong here,’ ” he shares.

A few years ago, he found out his teenage son was being bullied in high school in similar ways. He set out to educate himself on the many heroes of Latino culture to help his son feel proud of their background. That experience birthed his latest show, LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS, a 95-minute SparkNotes-style session highlighting everything from the Aztecs and Incas all the way up to Pitbull.

From a satirical recap of Aztec and Incan history to stories of Latin patriots in the Revolutionary and Civil War and beyond, Leguizamo breaks down 3,000 years into 95 irreverent and uncensored minutes in his trademark comedic style.
