MOSCOW | Iran is a major winner of an international festival in Russia. Iran’s Teetovak theater troupe performed a Shakespeare-inspired production of the Scottish play, and it won a top prize at Russia’s fourth international theater festival, it was reported on PressTV.
Directed and designed by Ebrahim Poshtkouhi’s production Hey Macbeth, Only the First Dog Knows Why It Is Barking, and it was selected as the best performance in Moscow Nights festival.
The musical comedy blends the Zar ritual of Iran’s southern Bushehr Province with Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. The ritual is performed by a group named Ahl-e hava, which is conducted by a leader called a Babazari who dances to the music played on the local percussion instrument known as dammam.
The play is also accompanied with a fusion of African, Indian and southern Iranian music composed by Reza Abbaspour.
“Our play is rooted in legends and rituals of southern Iran, and I hope it can present a different aspect of Iranian theater,” Poshtkouhi had earlier said in an interview with ISNA.
Hey Macbeth, Only the First Dog Knows Why It Is Barking made its debut at Tehran’s City Theater in August 2010.
Poshtkouhi’s stage work was also performed in several international events such as the 2011 edition of the annual Festival d’Avignon in France. This year’s edition of Moscow Nights festival was held from November 23 to 30, 2012.
