Philadelphia’s Mayor Michael A. Nutter

NEW YORK CITY |  Jazz and world music will be the focus of two daylong pre-conference events at APAP|NYC 2013.

The Jazz Connect Conference takes place Thursday, Jan. 10 and Friday, January 11. It is organized by JazzTimes in conjunction with the Jazz Forward Coalition with support from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.  Philadelphia’s mayor Michael A. Nutter gives the keynote speech at noon, Thursday, January 10 at the Hilton New York in New York City.

The World Music Conference takes place Thursday, Jan. 10 and Friday, January 11. It is organized by Dmitri Vietze of StoryAmp and rock paper scissors, inc.. This conference will focus on “key areas of the music business (labels, technology, touring), and will highlight new developments and helpful tools for professionals in the world music realm,” according to APAP’s press release.

Additional free pre-conference events, some of which require registration, will take place Friday, Jan. 11, and focus on dance, branded entertainment, audience engagement, fund raising, youth and family programming, classical music, festivals, international presenting, opera-theater and curatorial practice.

Recently re-elected to his second term as mayor of his hometown, Mayor Nutter has boosted jazz in Philadelphia through the creation of the Philly Jazz Society and for his support of International Jazz Day (April 30), the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month in that states. Jazz has been a key generator of the cultural economy in Philadelphia.

Immediately after Mayor Nutter’s address, a collection of jazz professionals will offer short TED-talk like presentations about jazz as a catalyst for connecting with the larger community. Among the presenters are Tom Carter, Jeff Myers, Arturo O’Farrill and Melissa Walker.

“APAP has long supported the efforts of pre-conference convenings such as the Under the Radar Theater Festival, and we are delighted to support the organizers of Jazz Connect, World Music and their missions during our conference,” says APAP President and CEO Mario Garcia Durham. “The presence of Mayor Nutter is an exciting and powerful way to show that jazz has deep support as both an art form and an economic engine. And our world music partnership is a way to solidify the international reach of our field.”

Both conferences will feature workshops, panels and events, and both are free but pre-registration is required for both jazz and world music attendees.

APAP|NYC 2013 kicks off after Jazz Connect at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, and runs through Jan. 15.

APAP|NYC requires a separate registration. The annual APAP|NYC conference takes place January 11-15, 2013.

Jazz Connect and World Music participants are encouraged to attend Winter Jazzfest, which features showcase performances by emerging and established jazz artists at numerous Village venues on Jan. 11 and 12.
