Vidanta Riviera Maya’s JOYÀ — Mexico’s only Cirque du Soleil Show — debuts “an immersive proposal experience”

By Randy Gener

RIVIERA MAYA + MEXICO CITY | via Grupo Vidanta + PRNewswire |  What exactly is “an immersive proposal experience”?  This phrase sounds like an odd retail marketing moniker, for sure.  Cirque du Soleil is, after all, most often associated with acrobats, teeterboard artists and clowns.

The Montreal-based circus can typically be found in such tourist-teeming places as Las Vegas, Disney World in Orlando even most recently Broadway. But the famed circus-style entertainment troupe also has a show on the Mexican Riviera. Who knew?

Envisioned by Grupo Vidanta and Cirque du Soleil, JOYÀ by Cirque du Soleil tags itself as a first-of-its-kind culinary and theatrical experience — you know, it is one of those the-only-experience-like-it-in-the-world spectacular.  Located in a park at Vidanta Riviera Maya, JOYÀ is Cirque’s first resident show in Mexico, and it is housed at Vidanta’s custom-designed theater.  And it’s “an immersive experiences” because the show fuses the culinary and performing arts that engages the audience’s five senses

JOYÀ by Cirque du Soleil tags itself as a first-of-its-kind culinary and theatrical experience — you know, one of those the-only-experience-like-it-in-the-world spectacular.

Located at Vidanta Riviera Maya, JOYÀ is Cirque’s first resident show in Mexico, and it is housed at Vidanta’s custom-designed theater.  And it’s an immersive experience, because the show fuses the culinary and performing arts that engages the audience’s five senses

Vidanta is a collection of luxury resorts located in seven stunning destinations in Mexico. This past February 2017, Vidanta debuted JOYÀ’s engagement experience.  The JOYÀ proposal package promises “a pre-show fully immersive cast experience, complete with an over-the-top VIP night to remember,” according to a prepared statement.

In unequal parts an eye-popping show, a lavish dinner and a prime piece of destination tourism, this Cirque du Soleil entertainment unravels in a new park at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta. which itself has been dubbed “an experience park.” Visitors are immersed in a new and magical realm full of surreal structures, strange characters, spectacular rides, and unexpected experiences. The park features three in-park resort hotels, each themed, as well as a full Cirque du Soleil show and water park experience.

Dinner + Circus + Unlimited Champagne

JOYÀ, the first Cirque du Soleil resident show in Mexico, combines culinary and performing arts in an intimate theater setting to engage the audience’s five senses. Drawing on Mexico’s history and heritage, JOYÀ tells the story of an alchemist and his granddaughter embarking on a quest to uncover the secrets of life. Live at Vidanta Riviera Maya.

As the region’s premier dinner-show experience, JOYÀ’s proposal package provides couples with “an unforgettable engagement” (yeah, more company hype). Beginning with welcome cocktails, the duo will be given central VIP theater seats where they’ll indulge in a three-course dinner while partaking in unlimited Mercier Champagne.

The story of JOYÀ follows a rebellious teenage girl.

She gets whisked away to the mysterious Mayan jungle.

Her grandfather is on a relentless quest for the meaning of life.

So far, the target seems to be newly-wed couples on a honeymoon and those who want to be engaged to be married. The proposal takes place at the end of dinner, before the show begins. The future fiancé will become the show’s protagonist, taking center stage along with one of JOYÀ’s talented singers for a romantic serenade that culminates in the proposal. The couple will have private time to enjoy the very special moment before the Cirque du Soleil JOYÀ show begins.

“The multi-sensory experience grips the audience from beginning to end, which will provide the perfect finale to a once-in-a-lifetime marriage proposal,” the prepared statement continues. In conjunction with the package, Vidanta Riviera Maya offers photography and video services that will capture the full proposal experience.

For many who are flocking to see JOYÀ, this experience is their first introduction to the Vidanta brand, which also includes resorts in such places as Los Cabos, Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. The Vidanta Riviera Maya resort has a Mayan Sanctuary, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, spa, cooking classes and three wildlife sanctuaries on property, including flamingo, crocodile and sea turtle.

Mexico’s culture inspires the entire JOYA show, from costumes and set design to the acts included in the production.  The audience finds echoes of JOYÀ’s themes in everything from the custom-crafted dishware, such as the books the dessert is served in and the edible menu and breadstick trees. Vidanta Corporate Chef Alexis Bostelmann worked closely with JOYÀ’s creators to cultivate a menu that has as much artistry and alchemy as the performance itself.

Since it was important to Cirque du Soleil and Vidanta for the culinary facet to be seamlessly incorporated into JOYÀ, Chef Bostelmann began his preparations years before opening night, planning every aspect of meal execution in concert with the show’s production. The result is a grand Mayan-influenced dining and entertainment experience.
