As doctors become increasingly specialized and spread thin, the nursing profession is expanding to include training beyond the traditional assisting roles and into responsibilities that were once off limits.

The College Choice ranking of online nursing programs seeks to help prospective nursing students decide which schools fit their educational and professional interests, as well as which are feasible for their financial situation.

“The job outlook for nursing professionals is outstanding, with an expected growth rate of 17 percent,” Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. “RNs can typically expect to earn in the neighborhood of $60k-$70k per year, depending on education and experience.”

College Choice developed its list by looking at academic quality along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings.

The ranking for the 50 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Degrees for 2017 finds Johns Hopkins University in the top spot. Duke University is in second, and The Ohio State University rounds out the top three.
