GPS | CZECH REPUBLIC: Kutna Hora | This is not Tolkien‘s Mines of Moria. This is not an image from Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit film sequel subtitled The Desolation of Smaug.
This is Sedlec’s Church in the city of Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic. The church contains an ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, whose bones have been artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel.
Who arranged the bones? Frantisek Rint, wood carver and artist, was employed by the Schwarzenberg family to imaginatively compose the bones into works of art. In the four corners of the ossuary sit four piles of bones carefully stacked with a hollowed center.
