ART OPENING | Iranian painter portrays faceless people in Dubai art gallery

DUBAI |  This is Tehran. That’s the overwhelming, poignant message of the oil paintings of Iranian artist Shohreh Mehran which depict people with their faces covered. Her work reflects an image of urban life which is more perceptible in the Iranian capital.

On March 18, Etemad Dubai is opening the most extensive showing in the United Arab Emirates of Shohreh Mehran’s work, as part of “Alserkal Galleries Night” (Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz 1) from 6 p.m. to  9 p.m.

Entitled “Defaced,” Shohreh Mehran’s recent paintings are portraits of anonymous people which the artist has produced over the last three years. These paintings are based on studies of the gestures of resistance and defiance. They are permanent records of the ‘faceless’ individuals who find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Born in Iran in 1958, Shohreh Mehran is a painter and a graphic designer who graduated with a degree in Graphic Arts from the Tehran College of Arts. Mehran’s images capture contemporary Iranian scenes and often feature people, particularly in the urban context of Tehran. She has exhibited widely in Iran and her works have also been shown in the Middle East and internationally, including at the Sharjah Biennial (2011), Iran Today, Brigitte Schenk Gallery, Koln (2010) Artspace, London (2007), Signature Gallery, Munster, and at the United Nations, New York (2000).
