DANCE REPORT | It’s Fusion vs. Bollywood/Hindi-Film at Boston’s South Asian Showdown on Feb. 9

BOSTON |  This looks like it’s going to be incredible fun. On Saturday, February 9th, 2013, competitive teams of South Asian dance enthusiasts will descend on the John Hancock Auditorium (180 Berkeley Street) in Boston, Mass., to duke it out.

The idea of South Asian Showdown is pit against one another the best dance teams from each South Asian genre. The dance style might be “South Asian Fusion” or “Bollywood/Hindi-Film.” Judges will select the evening’s best.

South Asian Fusion is defined as “a conglomeration of all South Asian dance and any other dance form that the team chooses to use” set to a majority of Indian music,” according to the official website of South Asian Showdown. “It is a very creative and unique form of dance incorporating many others forms of dance. Bollywood/Hindi-Film style of dance is based on the Bollywood film style of dance featuring expression, theme and storyline. It is a mini-story on stage set to Indian music.”

In the past, the showdown featured other Indian dance styles, notably bhangra and garba-raas, but not this year.

(In case you forgot: Bhangra began as a folk dance that Sikh farmers would do to welcome the harvest season and originated in the Punjab region of India. The teams can be all male, male and female, or all female, performing a gidda. Garba/Raas is a traditional folk dance originating from the Gujarat region of India. Most traditional garba’s are done in a circular motion around a central idol, typically Durga/Amba, or a fire. Raas is the same garba dance but with sticks. Typically garba is performed during the Navratri season in Gujarat, India.)
