NEW YORK CITY |  Sadly, the delightful “Dan Perjovschi: Exit Strategy,” a solo exhibition by the witty Romanian artist at Lombard Freid Projects in Chelsea, has recently closed. Perjovschi’s third solo show at this gallery wittily critiqued the recent American presidential election, so it was especially topical and timely. If you missed it, I’ve decided to post some photos of the gallery show.

Having collected months worth of the New York Times, Perjovschi turned his satirical eye on the material refuse of print media, highlighting the disposability and waste of American news-media culture.

The works presented in “Exit Strategy” followed the ins and outs of the Obama and Romney campaign trails. They were created on site in direct response to his U.S. sojourn. He hilariously addresses the 2012 election and its potential ramifications on current global relations.

In addition, “Exit Strategy” featured his War Collage series. These 56 smaller works on paper incorporate news articles, consumer packaging, and advertisements, humorously undermining their given purposes: to inform, to label, and to sell. These colorful juxtapositions coyly propose a complex—and comical—investigation of the relation between media and capitalism in the 21st century.

Dan Perjovschi, who lives and works in Bucharest, was born in Sibiu, Romania in 1961. He is famous on the international art scene for his unique cartoons that are composed of various images and texts, applied directly on internal or external architectural surfaces. His drawings, half graffiti-half cartoon, cover the walls of museums and galleries worldwide.

Since 1991, Perjovschi has worked as an illustrator and art director at the Romanian publication Revista 22, the first political magazine launched in Romania, after the fall of communism.

He attracted international attention in 1999, at the 48th Venice Biennale, when he covered the floor of the Romanian Pavilion with cartoons and political graffiti about life in post-communist Romania.

His recent and upcoming exhibitions include Between Lines, Kunstraum Stein, Krems; Perjovschi, Reykjavik Museum of Art; A Retrospective, Center for Contemporary Culture, Tours; The News After the News, Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; Intense Proximity: Art as Network, La Triennale Paris, Palais de Tokyo.
