CAUSES | Bonifacio Day celebration raises funds to benefit the typhoon victims in the Philippines

I would like to invite you to the Philippine Consulate General of New York’s 150th anniversary of the birth of Andres Bonifacio on Tuesday November 26 at 6:30 pm. The evening is also a Friends of FilCom fundraiser to benefit the victims of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in central Philippines. FilCom stands for the Filipino American Communities of the Northeast. Donations to the fundraiser will go to the Philippine Jesuit Foundation.

AWARDS | “A Song for My Mother” wins Plaridel Award for Outstanding Editorial Essay

The Plaridel Awards, a national competition honoring excellence in Filipino American journalism, were announced by the Philippine American Press Club USA (PAPC USA). The Plaridel Awards is named after Marcelo H. del Pilar, a Filipino journalist and publisher who over a century ago went into exile in Europe. Plaridel was his nom de plume, the anagram of his surname, Del Pilar.

This hybrid event is an open dialogue, a scrumptious dinner, a bicoastal culinary exchange and a kind of experimental performance. From a place “setting,” CULINARY DREAMS hopes to inspire cravings, generate food for thought, debate ideas, and reveal our cultural dreams.

“If policymakers are concerned about a decline in community life, the arts shouldn’t be disregarded as a means to promote an active citizenry,” said Kelly LeRoux, assistant professor of public administration at UIC and principal investigator on the study. “Our positive findings could strengthen the case for government support for the arts.”
